Cal State L.A. honors students have produced seven short films that will be screened this week at the Autry National Center of the American West.
The films deal with topics such as ethics, morality and technological change in the American West. They were produced by Early Entrance Program students from Honors History 202B as part of an innovative collaboration with the Autry Center.
The course, taught by Professor Chris Endy, allowed the freshmen students to research historical topics and work cooperatively as a team. The students attended workshops at the center, where members of the Autry Classroom Curators project provided guidance on researching the film projects.
“By translating historical documents and scholarship into visual and audio form, students can see history as an interpretative process with both intellectual and emotional dimensions,” Endy said. “Also, students learn how to delegate tasks, create work plans, synthesize competing perspectives, and draw on each member’s strength to advance their film projects.”
The films, which each run about five minutes, will be screened Friday, March 6, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the center’s Heritage Court. The event is titled “Progress and the West: A Screening of Digital Stories.” Before each film, student filmmakers will give a brief presentation on their topics or what they learned about filmmaking and collaboration.
The Early Entrance Program is housed under the auspices of the Honors College at Cal State L.A. and permits young, highly gifted students to enroll at the University.
