Cal State L.A. recognizes participants for completing Parent Academy program

April 24, 2014

Program assists parents of first-time freshmen in understanding, participating in their children’s transition to higher education

WHAT:   California State University, Los Angeles will recognize the parents who have attended all three meetings of the inaugural Parent Academy program, which assists the parents of first-time freshman students in understanding the often complex transition from high school to university life. The ceremony takes place Apr. 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cal State L.A.’s President William A. Covino will be on hand to present certificates of completion to these honored parents.

The Parent Academy provides parents a better understanding of what their son or daughter are experiencing as they transition from high school to college and adjust to college life. They learn how to more effectively support their son or daughter in becoming successful college students, how their children can make the most of their college experience, and how to help finance their education.

Parent Academy also helps de-mystify the university environment for parents and increases their comfort levels regarding their children’s educational possibilities and career choices. Many parents also find that higher education offers them their own pathways toward personal, intellectual or professional development. Parent Academy is offered in both English and Spanish.

WHEN:   Saturday, Apr. 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE:   Golden Eagle Ballrooms on the Cal State L.A. campus. The university is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 freeways. For a campus map and directions: www.calstatela.edu/univ/maps/.

CONTACTS:   Paul Browning at (323) 343-3044, or Margie Low at (323) 343-3050.
