Cal State L.A. to host panel discussion in honor of pioneering journalist Rubén Salazar

Special guest speakers to discuss the words and works of the renowned Mexican American reporter

Ruben Salazar photo What:  Cal State L.A. will present a panel discussion, “Rubén Salazar - Siempre Con Nosotros/Always With Us,” on Feb. 4. The discussion is being held in conjunction with a multimedia exhibition, “Legacy of Rubén Salazar: A Man of His Words, a Man of His Time,” on display at the University’s John F. Kennedy Memorial Library. The discussion and the exhibition are open to the public.

Who:  The panel discussion, co-hosted by the Chican@ Latin@ University Association, will feature special guests Dr. Félix Gutiérrez and Dr. Mario T. García, who will review the words and works of Rubén Salazar.

Félix Gutiérrez, a Cal State L.A. alumnus, is an emeritus professor of journalism and communication in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and an emeritus professor of American studies and ethnicity in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California. He is author or co-author of five books and more than 50 scholarly articles or book chapters, most on racial or technological diversity in media.

Mario T. García is professor of history and Chicano studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of several books including Desert Immigrants: The Mexicans of El Paso, 1880-1920; Mexican Americans: Leadership, Ideology & Identity, 1930-1960; and Ruben Salazar-Border Correspondent: Selected Writings, 1955-1970.

When:  Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m.

Where:  Cal State L.A. Golden Eagle Ballroom 2. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 freeways. Click here for a campus map.

Exhibit:  The exhibit, which runs through March 26, will showcase key aspects of Rubén Salazar’s life, career and their social context. It included Salazar’s articles on education, police-community relations in East Los Angeles, agricultural labor, the triumphs, frustrations and shortcomings of the Chicano community.
