Cal State LA dedicates Erika J. Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center

April 4, 2017

California State University, Los Angeles dedicated the Erika J. Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center.

Cal State LA President William A. Covino welcomed guests to the April 3 event and thanked Glazer for her generous and longtime support of the University and its Dreamers. The facility is the only endowed Dreamers Center in the CSU, the nation’s largest public university system.

Glazer was present at the dedication, along with Los Angeles Councilman Gil Cedillo, Executive Vice Mayor and Deputy Chief of Staff for the City of Los Angeles Rick Jacobs, and Dreamer and former Cal State LA student Melody Klingenfuss, who will graduate next month from USC with a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership and management.

“Today’s dedication comes at a time when the need for centers such as ours is evident,” Covino said. “The divisive climate in our nation and the looming threat of deportation have had a tremendous impact on undocumented students. Our undocumented students and their families now live with fear and uncertainty. Our faculty and staff search for ways to assist and protect students. What threatens some in our University community threatens all of us.”

Glazer, who has also provided scholarships for 36 Cal State LA Dreamers, said she had hoped that the Dreamers Center would be temporary. But she now realizes that the center will be needed for the foreseeable future to help students graduate and have successful careers.Glazer dedication event

“The Dreamers Center is now more deeply needed than ever,” Glazer told the gathering.

Glazer introduced Luz Borjon, who oversees the Dreamers Center. Borjon also addressed the audience.

Klingenfuss credited Glazer for her understanding, compassion and support for undocumented students. “Thank you for believing in people like us and our dreams,” she said.

The dedication closed with Cedillo presenting Glazer with a City Council proclamation for her commitment to Dreamers and their success.
