Cal State L.A. and Boeing team up to reach out to future engineers, scientists

Hundreds of local kids to create mini solar cars, participate in glider competition; Event to feature Boeing CTO and Cal State L.A. alumnus John Tracy

Boeing Day What:
California State University, Los Angeles and the Boeing Company are partnering to present their  10th Annual Boeing Day and College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) Open House on Saturday, Oct. 18. The event provides students with a closer look at the College of ECST, exposes them to opportunities in the fields of engineering, computer science and technology, and engages them in interactive activities and projects with professionals from Boeing. The firm’s chief technology officer, John Tracy, is an active Cal State L.A. graduate who received a master’s degree in physics from the University in 1981.

The goal of the partnership is to build a pipeline of engineers starting with middle school and high school students through the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Schools Program at Cal State L.A.

Who:
Students from the following high schools will be in attendance: Annenberg, Bell, Bloomfield, Burton Tech, Canoga Park, Collins Family, Eagle Rock, Franklin, Gabrielino, Lincoln, Maya Angelou, San Gabriel and STEM Academy of Boyle Heights.

Students from the following middle schools will also participate: Belvedere, College Ready #8, El Sereno, Nightingale, Nimitz, Ollin Prep, Roosevelt, Walnut Park and Wilson.

When:
Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Where:

Schedule:
9 a.m. – Welcome and remarks by College Dean Emily Allen and Boeing CTO John Tracy (Gym)
9:40 a.m. – MESA Orientation for middle school students (Gym), followed by ECST lab tours and ECST student project showcase
10:30 a.m. – Making Solar Cars (Library Courtyard) and Build Your Own Android App (E&T C255E)
11:20 a.m. – Making Solar Cars (Library Courtyard) and MESA H.S. Glider Competition (Gym)
12 p.m.– Lunch and Boeing representatives’ roundtable discussions (E&T Courtyard)
12:20 p.m. – Speaker: Andy Bicos of Boeing and raffle prize giveaways
