15-Year-Old Cal State L.A. Sophomore
to be Honored as
Woman of the Year
for 49th Assembly District

Los Angeles, CA-On Friday, March 24, California State University, Los Angeles undergraduate Yang "Kelly" Yang (San Gabriel resident) will be honored by California State Assemblymember Gloria Romero as Woman of the Year for the 49th Assembly District. This event, commemorating Women's History Month, will take place at the District Office, 1255 Corporate Center Drive, Suite PH9, Monterey Park, CA, 91754. For more information, call John Longoria, (323) 981-3426. On Monday, March 27, Yang will represent the 49th Assembly District at a formal State Assembly Women of the Year ceremony at the State Capitol. For more information on the Sacramento event, call Ignacio Hernandez, (916) 319-2049.

Last month, Yang was one of only 20 college students chosen for the USA Today All-USA Academic First Team from across the nation and, at 15, the youngest student ever selected for the distinction. The 20 students selected for this honor each received $2,500 and were guests of USA TODAY at a special awards luncheon in Arlington, Virginia, held last month. Winners were announced in the February 17 issue of USA TODAY.

On March 21, at a meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Mike Antonovich presented a certificate of recognition to Yang for her achievements and extraordinary community service. Following the presentation by Supervisor Antonovich, Cal State L.A. President James M. Rosser extended congratulatory remarks.

Born in Tianjin, China, Yang is a political science major with a pre-law option. Currently a sophomore, she holds a 3.96 GPA. Yang enrolled at Cal State L.A. in 1998, at 13, and is part of the University's Early Entrance Program (EEP), which introduces highly gifted junior high school-aged students directly into college life.

At Cal State L.A., Yang was the first EEP freshman hired as a staff writer for Cal State L.A.'s award-winning University Times, where she was honored as "Rookie of the Year." In addition to her academic achievements, Yang has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the Los Angeles Times Scholarship and the national honor society Phi Kappa Phi Freshman of the Year award.

Yang was a published author before she enrolled at Cal State L.A., with a book of fiction and poetry to her credit. She expects her next book, Yang Yang Experiences America, to be released this month. Yang publishes two monthly newspapers with articles written in English and Chinese-The Pen Times, distributed in the U.S. and targeted to children, precollege youth and their parents who want to have fun while improving their writing skills, and The Los Angeles English Guide, distributed in the U.S. and China, that teaches basic English, including American idioms and slang expressions.
