Cal State L.A. Celebrates
1999 Women's History Month

What & Who:
The Women's Resource Center at California State University, Los Angeles will host a month events to commemorate 1999 Women's History Month.

When:
Kick-off celebration: Monday, March 1, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Free Speech Area.

Where:
Cal State L.A. is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Freeways. Public permit dispenser parking available in Lot C, Lot G, or North Parking Structure II.

More Events:
Cup of Culture Reading Series: Women At Work. Tue., Mar. 2, 4 p.m. Café LA, U-SU. Women at Work, part of Writers at Work, is an impressive and diverse group of talented Los Angeles-based women who will read exciting new works of fiction and poetry. The group is led by the award-winning writer Terry Wolverton, author of Bailey's Beads.

"The Struggle for Economic and Agrarian Reform in Honduras." Wed., Mar. 3, 4 p.m. Maxwell Theatre, U-SU. Elvia Alvarado has spent three decades organizing for human rights and land reform in Honduras. She has been harassed, jailed, and tortured at the hands of the Honduran military for her work on behalf of the nation's peasants. Her life is the subject of a best-selling book, Don't Be Afraid Gringo. She is currently head of International Relations for the Union of Rural Workers and is an eloquent speaker on the nature of poverty and conflict in Central America and the role of women in the struggle for justice.

Femmes Aux Yeux Ouverts (Women with Open Eyes). Thu., Mar. 4, 12 noon and 7 p.m., Maxwell Theatre, U-SU. This award-winning documentary, one of the very few both by and about African women, shows women in four West African nations who are speaking out and organizing around such crucial issues as marital rights, reproductive health, female genital mutilation, and women's economic roles. Directed by Anne-Laure Folly, Togo, 1994, 52 minutes. In French with English subtitles.

Día De La Mujer. Sun., Mar. 7, 12 noon - 3 p.m., Los Angeles Room, U-SU. This special event honors the women in our lives with live music and great food. Celebrate the women who are important to you by bringing your mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends.

International Women's Day. Tue., Mar. 9, 12 noon-2 p.m., Free Speech Area (back-up: Program Area). This special event honors women from around the world. The event will include speakers, displays, and a wonderful performance of international dance.

Women's Film and Video Fest. Thu., Mar. 11, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Maxwell Theatre, U-SU. More great films directed by and about women will be screened including documentaries, feature films, and foreign films!
