Cal State L.A. Professor Named Great Marketing Teacher
by the Academy of Marketing Science

Los Angeles-June 4, 1999-Pasadena resident William A. Cohen, professor of marketing and leadership at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently named as one of four Great Teachers in Marketing by the Academy of Marketing Science during its annual conference in Coral Gables, Florida. This is the first time this award has been presented.

The Academy's selection committee had reviewed the nominations of 28 top marketing professors from around the world, said Jill Attaway, chair of the committee. "The committee was extremely impressed with the teaching accomplishments of all the nominees. The honorees can be justly proud of being selected as representing the very best in our profession," said Attaway.

Cohen said about his teaching philosophy: "A university education should assist in the development of character and self-confidence so that the graduate is motivated to continually grow throughout a lifetime of learning and contribute to society."

Cohen has taught at Cal State L.A. since 1979. He has won numerous awards including the Cal State L.A. Outstanding Professors Award (1982-83), the Freedoms Foundation George Washington Honor Medal for Excellence in Economic Education (1985) and the CSU Statewide Outstanding Professor Award (1996).

Cohen is the author of 55 articles. His 35 books have been translated into 11 languages. Two of his books were selected as "Best Business Books of the Year" by the Library Journal (1985 and 1990). In 1998, Cohen's book, The Stuff of Heroes: The Eight Universal Laws of Leadership, was nominated as one of the top ten management books of the year by Management General, a cybermagazine. The book was also on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list for two weeks, reaching the number four position.
