Cal State L.A. Students
Los Angeles, CA - March 16, 1999 - Cal State L.A. students Edgar Zuniga (Los Angeles resident), Ina Chang (Alhambra resident) and Darren Brown (Sylmar resident) were recently selected by The Freedom Forum as Chips Quinn Scholars. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship as well as a paid internship at a major newspaper. The award also includes an all-expense paid trip to Arlington, Virginia and Washington, DC in May, where they will participate in a four-day intensive reporting and writing seminar with four dozen other collegians from throughout the country.
Zuniga's internship will be at the Knight-Ridder newspaper, the Wichita Eagle, in Kansas. Chang will work on the Oakland Tribune. Brown was hired to work in the business section of the Contra Costa Times in the Bay Area, where he interned as a Chips Quinn Scholar during fall 1998.
All three follow the steps of Hector Becerra and Irma Lemus, two former editors-in-chief of the student campus newspaper University Times who were Chips Quinn Scholars. Becerra interned at the Nashville Tennessean and Lemus interned at the San Francisco Examiner.
