EPIC gathers from across Cal State L.A.
to give to its neighbors in need
In its 36th year, drive collects hundreds of
toys, food for low-income families
Los Angeles, CA – Growing richer as it gives more and more away, the holiday tradition of Cal State L.A.’s Educational Participation in the Communities (EPIC) program will again provide hundreds of gifts to low-income families near the campus this holiday season.
Now in its 36th year, the annual EPIC Holiday Toy and Food Drive collects donations from the University’s students and employees and sorts them for distribution.
On Thursday, Dec. 13, EPIC volunteers will deliver the gifts to more than 60 local families selected by non-profit community agencies in the greater Los Angeles area. Last year, the program collected about $10,000 worth of toys and food, which were delivered to 227 children and 93 adults.
EPIC, created in 1966, promotes volunteer community service by university students and creates opportunities for them to implement classroom theory in real-life situations beneficial to communities. Along with its annual holiday drive, it also provides youth-employment training, mentoring for schoolchildren, and, through America Reads and Counts, support for literacy and mathematics education.
About 80 students are volunteering this year to help the holiday toy and food drive.
