Twin Silver Tellys for CSULA video documentary

“I Built It” showcases career opportunities in construction

Los Angeles, CA –- 07/01/10 -– “I Built It, a documentary-video collaboration between Cal State L.A. and Art Simon Productions, recently garnered two Silver Tellys at the 31st Annual Telly Awards out of more than 13,000 entries from 50 states and five continents.

“I Built It” was written, produced and directed for the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards by Alan Bloom (Shadow Hills-Los Angeles resident), professor of communication studies at Cal State L.A., and CSULA alumnus Art Simon (Glendale resident), CEO of Art Simon Productions. They received a Silver Telly, the competition’s highest honor, in two categories: Recruitment and Government Relations.

According to Bloom, “The motivational, information video is designed to promote the Division of Apprenticeship Standards apprenticeship program, highlighting the different jobs that are available in building construction trades. The video has been posted online in various websites and distributed to unions, construction companies, high schools and community colleges as a recruitment tool.”

A CSULA faculty member since 1981, Bloom has directed more than 280 music videos, documentaries, experimental films, TV programs and spots, many of them garnering awards. He initiated the first music video courses to be taught on a college campus—at Cal State L.A. in 1985. He has been the program director of the Video Center at the American Film Institute.

Simon is a 1996 alumnus of Cal State L.A. who majored in film and telecommunications. He was a student of Bloom’s about 20 years ago and was a part-time faculty at Cal State L.A. He has produced numerous award-winning videos and films.

CSULA alumnus Walter Ruiz served as the project’s field production assistant.
