CAL STATE L.A. STUDENTS
RECOGNIZED FOR
COMMUNITY SERVICE & LEARNING

California State University recently honored Cal State L.A. students Rosafel Adriano (Service-Learning Honoree) and Michael Tan (Community Service Honoree) among 43 students statewide to receive the STARS (Students That Are Recognized for Service) award. The award acknowledges the students’ outstanding efforts in service-learning projects as well as their ongoing commitment to serve the community.

As part of CSULA Health Profession service-learning course, Rosafel Adriano (Buena Park resident) developed patient education materials and screening tools for colon cancer patients for Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, Inc. a non-profit community health center. Additionally, she translated these materials to Tagalog for Filipino patients. She contributed to an editorial column in the California Examiner to further promote awareness of the prevalence of colon cancer in the Asian community. Rosafel’s final activity was implementing a health fair for more than 300 members. Rosafel is a nursing major.

In 1998, at the age of 13, Michael Tan (Monterey Park resident) was accepted into the Early Entrance Program (EEP) at Cal State L.A. He is ranked in the top 5% of students who have ever participated in EEP and has earned Dean’s list honors for every quarter of attendance. Michael has served as a freshman mentor, tutor, trip counselor, and academic advisor in the EEP program. In addition, he has volunteered for the Circle K service organization, participated in student government, several campus clubs, and Cal State L.A.’s leadership program. His most recent distinction as CSULA’s Alumni Association “Student of the Year” is a testimony to Michael’s outstanding contributions as a campus scholar and leader. Michael is a business administration and computer information systems major.

CSU STARS 2003
The Students That Are Recognized for Service (STARS) program recognizes the significant contribution of CSU student leaders who are actively involved in improving their communities through community service activities or service-learning activities. Recipients have demonstrated strong leaderships skills and accomplished innovative projects. The culmination of the STARS award is a systemwide event in which each nominee is recognized at a ceremony hosted by Chancellor Charles B. Reed. The STARS program illustrates the importance of serving the community, which is a longstanding tradition in the mission and purpose of the California State University. CSU students fulfill this touchstone by engaging in a variety of community service, national service, and service-learning opportunities. According to the 1999 Student Needs and Priorities Survey, CSU students contribute more than 33.6 million hours of service each year to California communities, which is equivalent in minimum wage value of more than $193.2 million.
