Kudos to Ling for high-quality work, can-do attitude

Montebello resident honored as
Cal State L.A.’s outstanding staff member

Los Angeles, CA – Recognized for consistently producing high-quality work in a timely manner, Monica Ling was named the 2009 Outstanding Staff Award honoree at California State University, Los Angeles. Ling, administrative support assistant for Cal State L.A.’s School of Nursing, was selected from among 11 nominations by colleagues, faculty and students.

Described as a “highly committed, hard-working self-starter,” Ling has been a staff member at Cal State L.A. for more than 10 years.

According to a colleague, “It is the work ethic, dedication, and tireless effort in fulfilling her duties that sets Ling apart. She has demonstrated an ability to adapt to any given situation; continuing to produce the same level of superior work. She is loyal, honest, considerate, and a supportive individual who has the ability to see and understand things from another person’s perspective.”

Another commented that she “takes time to explain and guide students and prospective students through any given situation or refers them to other resources when appropriate. ‘No’ or ‘I don’t know’ are not a part of Ling’s vocabulary.”

Additionally, Ling serves as a test proctor for the University Testing Center and has volunteered at the University’s annual Grad Fair to provide seniors with information and resources for graduation.

A Cal State L.A. alumna, she achieved her bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in communication studies while working full-time as a cashier for Barnes and Noble.

Ling said, “It is an honor to receive the 2009 outstanding staff award! I believe everyone in this world has a special gift; my special gift is to help people. I have always loved to help people. Cal State L.A. has given me the opportunity to do just that. When students come to my office with problems, I will do all I can do to find solutions.

“My experience at CSULA has been great. The staff and the faculty on campus have not only taught me how to do many things, but have always encouraged me and given me credit for using my own ideas and contacts to help our students. Without their guidance and support, I would never have been nominated for this award—let alone received this year’s wonderful recognition of my efforts.”

A resident of Montebello, Ling is secretary of her Neighborhood Watch group and she volunteers to serve food at a homeless shelter in her community. During her free time, she enjoys reading, stamp collecting, photo-taking and scrapbooking.

As Cal State L.A.’s 2009 Outstanding Staff Award recipient, Ling was presented season passes to the Luckman Theatre, a cashier’s check from the CSULA Federal Credit Union, and a designated parking space on campus.

In addition to recognizing the outstanding staff at this annual awards reception, the Cal State L.A. community honored employees with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service.
