Cal State L.A. Honors Head of Wal-Mart
at Retailer of the Year Award Luncheon

Retailing scholarships also to be awarded

What:
The Institute of Retail Management of the College of Business and Economics at California State University, Los Angeles will honor Thomas M. Coughlin, president and chief executive officer, Wal-Mart Stores and Supercenters, USA, at its 2002 Retailer of the Year Award Luncheon. Proceeds from this gala affair, which is considered to be one of the retail industry’s most significant annual events, will be used to support the educational activities of the Institute and to provide student scholarships.

When:
Wednesday, February 20, 2002, 11 a.m.

Where:
Westin Bonaventure Hotel, downtown Los Angeles.

Honoree:
Thomas M. Coughlin, president/CEO of the Wal-Mart Stores, is responsible for all Wal-Mart Discount Stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, as well as the Loss Prevention and Marketing Divisions of Wal-Mart Stores. Since joining Wal-Mart Stores in 1978, Coughlin has served as vice president of loss prevention; vice president of human resources; executive vice president of SAM’s Club Operations; executive vice president of specialty groups; and executive vice president and chief operating officer of Wal-Mart Store Operations. In fall 2001, he was elected to the Wal-Mart Board of Directors. Prior to his employment at Wal-Mart, Coughlin worked at R.H. Macy, West Coast Division, and Cook United, Inc. Coughlin graduated from CSU Hayward with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

During the luncheon, dozens of scholarships in significant amounts of money will be awarded to students interested in attending two-year and four-year colleges/universities.
