Cal State L.A. Presents Japanese "Sit-Down" Comedy Los Angeles, CA -- September 21, 1998 -- California State University, Los Angeles will host a rare U.S. Rakugo performance-Japanese "sit-down" (as opposed to "stand-up") comedy-on Friday, October 9, 1998, at 8 p.m. in the University's State Playhouse. The performance, by a troupe of professional Rakugo actors and musicians from Osaka, Japan, has English and Japanese translations. Rakugo is a form of dramatic and comic storytelling that includes centuries-old narratives as well as modern comic inventions. The training of actors occurs when performers are placed under the direction of a master teacher over a period of years. The performers take the name of the master teacher with whom they have trained. The performance is free, but to guarantee admission, tickets should be reserved. Reservations can be made by calling the State Playhouse Box Office at (323) 343-4118. Reserved tickets must be picked up the evening of the performance, between 7 and 7:30 p.m. After 7:30 p.m., tickets will be released for distribution. The October 9 performance is hosted by Cal State L.A.'s School of Arts and Letters, Japanese Studies Center, School of Natural and Social Sciences, and Department of Anthropology. The Rakugo in English USA Tour '98 is sponsored by The Japan Foundation, United Airlines, and the Foreign Educational Service, with additional support from the Japan Society for Humor and Laughter Studies.
