Author Peter Schrag Presents
"Equity in Our Schools:
Fulfilling the Promise of Brown"
at Cal State L.A. Event
What & Who:
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Cal State L.A. is hosting a lecture and book signing with the thought-provoking author Peter Schrag, former editor of the Sacramento Bee. Despite this 1954 landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional, reformers are still struggling to close the wide educational gap that exists among student populations from different ethnic groups. In Peter SchragÂs latest book, Final Test, he presents the story of a new battle for equality in AmericaÂs schools.
Sunday, November 14, 2004.
2:30 p.m. - refreshments
3:00 p.m. - lecture and book signing
Cal State L.A. King Hall Lecture Hall 1. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys. Public (dispenser) parking is available in Lots C, F and G or upper level of Parking Structure II.
Author Peter Schrag will discuss how advocates for the poor, as well as scholars and judges, have developed a new strategy for the battle for equality in AmericaÂs schools: public policies should be based on calculations of ÂadequacyÂÂwhat it actually takes in teachers, books, facilities, and other resources to educate each child. Also, that States would have the responsibility of providing adequate resources for children to learn the materials on which they are to be tested, if they require children to pass tests for promotion and graduation.
