Cal State L.A. to Host a
Campus Week of Dialogue on Race

What & Who:
Cal State L.A. will hold a "Campus Week of Dialogue," as part of The President's Initiative on Race, called for by President Clinton. The lectures and cultural events listed below are organized to encourage dialogue and understanding among students, faculty and staff about racial diversity.

When:
Tuesday, October 5 - Chicana/o Latina/o Awareness Series Kick Off.
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Free Speech Area, University-Student Union (U-SU).

In honor of la mujer, this event kicks off a month-long series of programs celebrating the lives and accomplishments of strong, powerful and talented Chicanas and Latinas. Entertainment includes Chicano punk from Dios Elefante and a spoken word performance by Mujeres de Maíz.

Tuesday, October 5 and Wednesday, October 6 - Film: My Family.
12 noon & 6:00 p.m. Maxwell Theatre, U-SU.

This well-wrought chronicle of two generations of a Los Angeles Mexican family will have audiences smiling through tears. Rated R, 125 min.

Tuesday, October 5 - Cup of Culture: Keith Boykin.
4:00 p.m. Maxwell Theatre, 2nd floor, U-SU.

Respecting the Soul: Daily Reflections for Black Lesbians and Gays is the latest book by Keith Boykin, writer, lawyer, lecturer and former member of President Clinton's leadership team. Boykin will read from his work and facilitate an interactive conversation about people of color and different sexual orientation. He will also share his visions for building an inclusive multicultural community.

Wednesday, October 6 - Java 'n Jam: Elliott Caine Quartet.
3:00 p.m. Café LA, 1st floor, U-SU.

Inspired by 1960s Blue Note style jazz. The quartet will perform original compositions within the jazz and Latin idioms.

Wednesday, October 6-"True Colors: Exploring the Realities of Skin Color, Sexism, Heterosexism, Classism, and Privilege in America."
7:30 p.m. Phase II Lounge, Housing, Cal State L.A.

This experiential workshop explores issues of oppression and privilege in America and the college campus. Refreshments will be provided.

Thursday, October 7 - Film: Blue Eyed.
12 noon and 6 p.m. Maxwell Theatre, 2nd floor, U-SU.

Jane Elliott leads a group of 40 adults through her widely known blue-eyed/brown-eyed exercise, demonstrating the devastating impact of life-long discrimination experienced by people of color. A discussion with Frederick Smith, Cross Cultural Program coordinator at Cal State L.A. to follow.

Thursday, October 7 - "Is Race Real?: A Conversation About 'Race.'"
3:00 p.m. Women's Resource Center, 2nd floor, U-SU.

This discussion will explore the definitions and meanings of the word "race." Who created "race" and why? And, what about the "others" who don't fit into the created boxes? Refreshments will be served.

Where:
Cal State L.A. is located at the Eastern Ave. exit, San Bernardino Freeway., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 freeways. Public (permit dispenser) parking available in Lots C and G or upper level Parking Structure II.
