Q Production Inc. presents Papillon III
at the Luckman Starring Patti Austin
and Frances Yip

LOS ANGELES – Grammy nominee Patti Austin and popular Chinese vocalist Frances Yip will appear together in concert for the first time in Los Angeles at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, Cal State L.A., on Friday, February 28, at 8:00 p.m.

A reprise of the sold-out Papillon II engagement last May at San Francisco’s Herbst Theater, Papillon III in Los Angeles will again blend the cultures of East and West through the beautiful voices of Yip and Austin. Cosmopolitan singer of Hong Kong Ms. Frances Yip is equally at home singing in Mandarin, Cantonese or English, and the legendary Patti Austin is one of the rare American vocalists who also sings in Mandarin.

With a talent and personality as dynamic as her birthplace Hong Kong, Asia’s leading lady of song, Frances Yip has been described as the Asian Barbra Streisand. She has performed in more than 30 countries on five continents, and travels more than 60,000 miles each year. During an active recording career, she has released more than 80 albums with songs in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, Thai, Japanese, and Polynesian. She is well-known for her signature song, “Shang Hai Tan” – the theme song for actor Chow Yuen Fat’s famous TV series Shanghai Beach.

Patti Austin’s “For Ella” CD recently received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She has been able to explore almost every genre of music through a career that spans more than three decades, and has been heard on literally hundreds of television commercials. Her chart-stopping duet for Qwest, “Baby Come to Me” with James Ingram in 1982 was followed by a number of top-selling albums on various labels. In recent years, Austin has performed extensively throughout the Far East, where she is immensely popular.

According to executive producer Lulu Bagaman of Q Production, the history-making vision of Papillon is to learn from and draw two spectrums of the music world together. “After the huge success of the Bay Area concerts,” she states, “the goal is to bring this incredible performance and concept to Southern California and beyond. The location of the Luckman just east of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Alhambra and Monterey Park, makes it the ideal venue to reach a wider, culturally diverse audience and to create an electrifying moment of true ‘East meets West.’”

This concert is a production of Q Production Inc. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Jade Ribbon Campaign, a multimedia effort to educate the Asian/Pacific Islander community, as well as the medical community, about Hepatitis B. The Jade Ribbon Campaign is spearheaded by the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University. Special thanks to Cal Star Mercedes, Cathay Pacific Airways, Yamaha, Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Sing-Tao Daily, Xenon Projection Services, Yamaha Music Academy of Fullerton and Yorba Linda, and Market Access Company.
