FREE PERFORMANCES, SESSIONS WITH
OUTSTANDING COMPOSERS
TO TAKE PLACE AT CAL STATE L.A.

Los Angeles, CA -- October 15, 1998 -- In collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, California State University Los Angeles will host a series of visiting composers who will participate in campus programs linking the University, southern California high schools, and area community colleges and universities. The first of these programs features H.K. Gruber, composer and chansonnier, on Wednesday, October 21, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Cal State L.A. Music Hall. H.K. Gruber is an innovative composer of music with a theatrical flair. His "pan-demonium" Frankenstein will be performed as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series.

The Cal State L.A. event consists of two coaching sessions for student and faculty ensembles from Orange County and from Los Angeles. Gruber will coach the Orange County High School for the Arts, with Chris Russell as conductor, in a performance of his Three Mob Pieces. The second coaching session will benefit Cal State L.A. voice faculty and students under the direction of René Aravena, assistant professor of Music and director of the Cal State L.A. Opera Workshop. The concluding segment of this presentation will feature a talk by Gruber on his music and upcoming performance in the Green Umbrella Series.

The guest composer series is designed to help young musicians develop their talents as players, composers and conductors. These events are free and open to the public. Parking at 50 cents per hour is available in the north parking structure adjacent to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. For more information, call (323) 343-4001.
