Cal State L.A. is Rated Fourteenth in the Nation of Colleges Granting B.A. Degrees in Nursing to Hispanics

Los Angeles, CA-Hispanic Outlook has ranked California State University, Los Angeles fourteenth among the top 50 U.S. colleges granting B.A. degrees in Nursing to Hispanics in its June 2000 issue. The listing included such universities as Florida International University, San Jose State University, Texas A&M, USC and CSU Dominguez Hills, among others.

An accompanying article states: "Outside of the traditional health careers [physician, nurse or pharmacist], in the last decade the health professions category has grown to include a multitude of specialized technology-related and health administrative positions, all of which are reflected in the choice of majors available at colleges and universities."

However, according to the U.S. Department of Education statistics indicating the top 100 schools conferring bachelor's degrees to Hispanics, nursing still topped the list. "In the 1997-98 academic year, 1,096 Hispanics received a bachelor's in nursing; 32 schools awarded ten or more degrees."

The article also noted: "Health services is one of the largest industries in the country, with about 11.3 million jobs, including self-employed. About 14 percent of all wage and salary jobs created between 1998 and 2008 will be in health services."

Cal State L.A. is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, with 51 percent of the University's students identifying themselves as Hispanic. The Department of Nursing's Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Option in the master's program, established in 1997, is the first in the CSU system.
