John Lion New Plays Festival 2002 to Feature
Works by Cal State L.A.’s Student Playwrights

What & Who:
California State University, Los Angeles will present The John Lion New Plays Festival 2002 featuring short, one-act scripts presented by student playwrights: Gaining Loss by Kimberly Simpson, Lessons in a Three-Card Monte by Angela A. Wiencek, Kudzu Daughters by Lynn De Young, Gray’s Autumn by Jooyoung Song, Landmark Love by Reggie DeLeon, Take a Ride by Scott Anthony Lopez, Riding Low, Driving Slow, Mi Vida by Roxanna Sanchez, and Dear Diary by Melissa Sidur. (Riding Low, Driving Slow, Mi Vida may be included in a Channel 34 news story about the culture of low riders.) Sponsored by Cal State L.A.’s Department of Theatre Arts and Dance.

When:
March 8-10, 15-17, 2002.
Fri. & Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 2:30 p.m.

Where:
Cal State L.A. Music Hall. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of 10 and 710 Freeways. Parking is available in the North Parking Structure II for $.50 per hour.

The New Plays Festival at Cal State L.A. has been named in memory of John Lion, honoring his achievements in theatre and education, as well as his appointment as chair of the Theatre Arts and Dance Department at Cal State L.A. Mr. Lion, who passed away on August 1, 1999, was producing director of the American College Theater Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, for six years. During his tenure at the Kennedy Center, he quadrupled the total number of awards for which students and participating institutions may compete. Prior to his tenure at the Kennedy Center, Lion’s work as founder of the Magic Theater in San Francisco made him an icon of the American Theatre. His residency at the “Magic” saw the theater receive 10 Obie awards, literally scores of Bay Area Theater awards, and the Margo Jones Award. He was the author of publications on diverse topics dealing with theatre. Lion held appointed positions on prestigious panels including the National Endowment for the Arts and Rockefeller Council.
