Cal State L.A. Freshman Monica Tokoro
Named CCAA Women'’s Basketball
Player of the Week

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. freshman point guard Monica Tokoro (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) has been named the Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced this afternoon by the CCAA conference office.

Tokoro scored 34 points in Saturday night’s win at Sonoma State, a team which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the west region rankings and poised to earn an NCAA Regional berth. In that 78-67 win over the Cossacks, Tokoro shot a blistering 14-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line, tallying seven boards, five assists and three steals in addition to her 34 points. The 34-point effort ranks eighth in CSLA history and is the most points scored by a Golden Eagle since Leeann Horner scored 35 against Alaska-Anchorage on November 18, 1988.

On Friday night, Tokoro posted 19 points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds in a 71-61 win at San Francisco State. For the weekend, she averaged 26.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals, hitting 20-of-30 (.667) from the floor and 12-of-13 (.923) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles (12-13, 11-9 CCAA) return home this weekend for final two games of the season as Cal State L.A. hosts Cal State Stanislaus (Fri., March 1) and Cal State Bakersfield (Sat., March 2) in women’s-men’s doubleheaders. Tipoff times in the Eagles Nest both nights are 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).
