 | Teen Girls Participate in Los Angeles, CA - A group of 10th and 11th grade girls and their mothers are participating in this year's Cal State L.A. Mother-Daughter Saturday Engineering Academy, a program where young ladies can learn about engineering and at the same time have fun with their mothers. "Young women who enjoy science and math should know that there are wonderful career opportunities in engineering available to them," says Dr. Neda Fabris, professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Academy's founder. In this program, high school juniors and seniors, along with their mothers (or female guardians), meet successful female engineers, visit high-tech companies and take part in lectures and contests. Hands-on experiments abound, such as building a mini-bridge tower, subjecting a raw egg to a two-story bungee jump and racing a mini solar car. Classes are small (20 teams per course), so participants receive individual attention and have many opportunities to ask questions. The summer session is being held on July 8, July 10-13, and July 15. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays. Academy Two for Girls (program for students whose mothers cannot attend) will be held from July 17-July 28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on either program, contact the Cal State L.A.
