Cal State L.A. Student Receives Phi Alpha Theta's 1997 Best Graduate Paper Award
Los Angeles, California -- June 2, 1997 -- Cal State L.A. graduate student in history, Michelle Sibinovic, was recently presented the 1997 Best Graduate Paper award by the international history honor society Phi Alpha Theta during its Southern California regional conference.
This special honor is given annually to a graduate and an undergraduate student from each of the four regions whose papers demonstrate excellence in content and research. The award includes a certificate of accomplishment and an opportunity to participate this August at the Pacific Coast Branch meeting of the American Historical Association, to be held in Portland, Oregon.
Sibinovic, a Temple City resident, received the award for her outstanding graduate paper, "Chap Books and Steady-Sellers: The Influence of Seventeenth-Century Popular Literature in the Construction of New England's Witch." The paper was written for Professor Philip Goff who, along with Professors Lillian Taiz and Lael Sorensen, has served as Sibinovic's mentor in her graduate program. In 1995, Sibinovic graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Social Science at Cal State L.A. Sibinovic is also a past president and vice president of Cal State L.A.'s Eta Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.
