Lula Washington Dance Theatre’s
Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration

Lula Washington Dance Theatre’s Pre-Kwanzaa Holiday Celebration returns for the fifth year in a row to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. on Saturday, December 22 at 8:00 p.m.

Through this annual concert, Lula Washington celebrates the upcoming Kwanzaa and Christmas holidays simultaneously. “This celebration brings together families. It celebrates our children, our African heritage, and it gives the community a reason to gather in peace and joy,” said Tamica Washington-Miller, Lula's daughter and co-producer of the program. "This is a family performance for children and adults alike."

Highlights of this year’s program include a dynamic African dance extravaganza with the Showla Dance Company from the Ivory Coast; the Third World, African jazz music of Boujoubumbastic; and a performance of “Harambee.”

Kwanzaa is a community celebration developed by African-Americans that centers on the following seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. These principles are each acknowledged for one day, from the day after Christmas through New Year’s Day. People are encouraged to remember all year.

According to the California Arts Council, the Los Angeles-based LWDT is the largest modern dance company in Southern California. Founder Lula Washington was honored October 14 as the “2001 Educator of the Year” from the American Choreography Awards in Hollywood for her contribution to the education and development of dancers, spanning over two decades. She was also recently chosen to receive the Professional Artists in Schools Award (PASA), which is dedicated to “artists who have spent a considerable portion of their artistic lives working in schools.”
