 | LUCKMAN JAZZ ORCHESTRA (See below for revised roster of musicians.) The Luckman Jazz Orchestra will perform works by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Buddy Collette, Charles Mingus, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the world premiere of a composition by James Newton on Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, Cal State L.A. Flutist/composer/conductor Newton, Luckman Director of Music Programming and Research, and a music professor at Cal State L.A., will conduct the 17-piece ensemble, which he describes as "both a cutting edge and repertory jazz orchestra." The orchestra debuted at the Luckman in February, 2001 to enthusiastic media coverage, and will include some of the top jazz artists in Los Angeles. For the November 17 program only, the revised roster of musicians who will perform includes: Trumpets: Bijon Watson, Carl Saunders, Snooky Young, Bobby Rodriguez; Trombones: George Bohanon, Isaac Smith, George McMullen; Tuba: William Roper; Saxophones: Charles Owens (Alto), Ann Patterson (Alto), Bennie Maupin (Tenor), Frederick Keith Fiddmont (Tenor), Jack Nimitz (Bari); Piano: Lanny Hartley; Drums: Sonship Theus; Bass: Jeffery Littleton; Percussion: Don Littleton As Luckman Director of Music Programming and Research, James Newton is developing an eclectic schedule of jazz, classical and world music. Named in the Downbeat critics poll as the top jazz flutist for 20 years running, and a Guggenheim Fellow, Newton is equally at home in a variety of genres, and has won numerous awards, grants and commissions in jazz, opera, ballet, classical and chamber music. He has worked with some of the great artists in both jazz and classical music, including David Murray, the New York Philharmonic, Kenny Burrell, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, Herbie Hancock, John Carter, and many others. His latest CD, As the Sound of Many Waters, was recorded with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and released on New World Records.
