Cal State L.A. to Present Achievement Awards
at the First Annual Health Awards Gala

Los Angeles, CA - May 15, 1998 -- On Saturday, May 23, 1998, the Cal State L.A. Health Science Student Association (HSSA) will host the First Annual Health Awards Gala honoring both Dr. Keith L. Black, director of the Neurosurgery Institute at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, who will be the first recipient of the Dr. Charles R. Drew Health Professional Achievement Award, and posthumously, Dr. Charles R. Drew, who will be awarded the first Health Profession Humanitarian Award. Dr. Drew's daughter and banquet co-chair, Mrs. Sylvia Drew Ivie, will be accepting this award on her father's behalf. The gala begins 7 p.m. in the Eagles' Landing Cafeteria, on the Cal State L.A. campus.

The Dr. Charles R. Drew Health Professional Achievement Award was created as a tribute to the late Dr. Charles R. Drew for his life-long and life-saving contributions to the advancement of the health care profession. The HSSA established the Health Profession Humanitarian Award to recognize individuals whose discoveries, knowledge, insights, and wisdom have contributed to the health and well-being of our multicultural society. The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the health care profession.

The Cal State L.A. Health Science Student Association is an affiliate of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the first professional health science student organization in the history of California State University, Los Angeles.

This gala is part of the University's first Health Science Expo, designed and coordinated by HSSA. The expo runs from May 18-23, on the Cal State L.A. campus. For more information or gala reservations, call (323) 343-4741.
