Student Accomplishments at
38th Honors Convocation

What & Who:
The University Honors Convocation will recognize more than 2,000 Cal State L.A. students whose academic record places them in the upper fifth percentile of their peers. Dean's List honorees, recipients of scholarships, grants and alumni certificates of honor, and general education honors program participants will be honored at the program. In addition, more than 100 new freshmen will be recognized for having entered the University with a 3.5 GPA or higher on their high school records.

Friday, April 23, 1999, 7 p.m.

Cal State L.A. Eagles' Nest Gymnasium. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys.

Cal State L.A. alumnus John Huerta, general counsel for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker at this year's Honors Convocation. Huerta directs an office of 11 attorneys who advise in commercial contract, real estate, employment, entertainment, intellectual property and civil rights matters, and provide representation in administrative proceedings and litigation.

Huerta has handled cases before 5th and 9th Circuit Courts of Appeal, and before the California and United States Supreme Courts. He has also lectured extensively on civil and human rights to professional associations, civil rights organizations and university groups throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. Huerta attended Cal State L.A. from 1961 through 1965, and graduated with a B.A. in government. During his studies at the University, he founded the Folk Music Society, served as student body president and started the first Cal State L.A. tutorial program for Latino high school students.

The Convocation ceremony will begin with a formal processional, with faculty robed in colorful academic regalia. Immediately following the Convocation, honors students and their guests are invited to programs and receptions hosted by their Schools.
