CSLA'S HERBOLD TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE AMERICAN BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION'S HALL OF FAME

Los Angeles, CA -- Feb. 4, 1997 -- Cal State L.A. head baseball coach John Herbold was recently selected for induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame at a ceremony to be held on January 3, 1998, at the ABCA's national convention at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.

Herbold, regarded as a coach with a long-standing reputation for developing professional caliber talent, began his 14th season with the Golden Eagles this season. In terms of post-collegiate baseball success, Cal State L.A. has ranked among the nation's Top 25 schools -- regardless of division -- in having his players go on to professional baseball careers. Herbold is a contributing factor to this success.

Last year, Herbold recorded his 10th 20+ win-season and guided his team to a third place conference finish in the always competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Herbold came to CSLA after a very successful 28-year career coaching at the high school ranks. In fact, he is the only living coach to win CIF baseball championships at two different schools (Long Beach Poly in 1963 and Lakewood High in 1970 and 1974.) As a prep coach, Herbold compiled an .728 winning percentage (438-176).
