‘¡Salsa!’ with Latin music legend Larry Harlow

Benefit concert at Luckman Theatre to support

Afro-Latin Music program at Cal State L.A.

Los Angeles, CA Salsa music legend and renowned Latin-style pianist Larry Harlow will be performing in a special salsa music concert Saturday, Nov. 15, 8 p.m., at the Luckman Theatre, on the Cal State L.A. campus.

Presenting a night of salsa rhythms, contemporary Latin music, and Afro-Latin Jazz, “¡Salsa! Larry Harlow in Concert” will also feature vocalist Iris Sandra Cepeda, bassist Eddie Resto, CSULA faculty artists, and the CSULA Afro-Latin Ensemble directed by CSULA Professor Paul De Castro.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the establishment of the Larry Harlow Fund for Students and Programs of Afro-Latin Music at Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. offers the only Master of Music degree specializing in Afro-Latin music in the United States. The M.M. in Afro-Latin Music option at Cal State L.A. is a unique program preparing graduate students for professional careers as arrangers, composers, and performers in Afro-Latin Music. The program’s faculty comprises Afro-Latin musicians Danilo Lozano, Raul Pineda, and Iris Sandra Cepeda, among others.

Harlow is recognized as a revolutionary of the Latin music known today as “salsa.” His influence in the early ’70s developed the explosive trumpet and trombone sounds now familiar in contemporary salsa bands. A graduate of the New York High School of Music and Art, Harlow holds a B.A. in music from Brooklyn College and a master’s degree in philosophy from the New School of Social Research in New York City. He is a talented player of the oboe, flute, violin, bass and, most notably, the piano. He is a three-time Grammy nominee and was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2000. As a governor of the New York chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Harlow helped to establish the first Latin Grammy Award. There are now 12 different Latin categories in the Grammy’s, as well as the exclusive Latin Grammy Awards.

Sponsor ticket packages range from $50 to $500 and include a post-show reception. For the benefactor level ticket, an exclusive VIP reception with Harlow is included. Regular tickets are $30 for general admission, and $15 for students.

To purchase sponsor package tickets, contact Cal State L.A.’s College of Arts and Letters in advance at 323-343-4001. Single tickets will also be available for purchase at the Luckman Box Office one hour prior to showtime.
