51st COMMENCEMENT--SAT., JUNE 13--IS GRAND FINALE OF
CAL STATE L.A.'S 50th ANNIVERSARY YEAR

The Class of '98 includes 10 teen-aged students,
an outstanding graduate, an award-winning student journalist,
four joint doctoral recipients, and an Honorary Doctorate

Los Angeles, CA - May 18, 1998 - The 51st Commencement exercises at California State University, Los Angeles will take place on Saturday, June 13, 1998, in the University Athletic Stadium, located at the southeast corner of the campus. The academic procession will start at 8:15 a.m. and the formal exercises are scheduled to end at approximately 10 a.m. Department and program receptions in various campus locations will follow the ceremony. The festive, ceremonial event will also serve to close the 50th Anniversary celebration that the University has observed throughout its 1997-1998 academic year.

Speaker for the June 13 Commencement will be Delaine Eastin, California's State Superintendent for Public Instruction. The Honorable Edward R. Roybal, former Congressman of 25th district, who has made significant contributions to the University and the greater Los Angeles community, will be presented a CSU/Cal State L.A. Honorary Doctor of Laws degree at this anniversary event.

More than 20,000 people are expected at this year's graduation to witness the conferral of more than 900 master's degrees and 3,000 bachelor's degrees.

Among the outstanding students receiving degrees are: Hector Becerra, a national award-winning student journalist and English major; Yuri Ogawa, a returning student and nursing major, recipient of the 1997-98 Outstanding Senior award from the Cal State L.A.'s Alumni Association; Cal State L.A./UCLA joint special education doctoral recipients Patricia Adams, Paula Arvedson, Margaret Clark and Susan Terry-Gage; and Early Entrance Program students Billy Chen (biology), Naomi Cheung (biology), Liz Gayed (psychology), Charlly Kao (biology), Hyongsoon Kim (political science), Kathy Kuo (English), Artur Prejna (biology), Sagar Vaidya (biology), Suzanne Vega (criminal justice) and Adam Witthuhn (English). What:
The Commencement of Cal State L.A.'s 51st graduating class is a festive, ceremonial event that will also mark the close of Cal State L.A.'s 50th Anniversary year. More than 20,000 people are expected at this year's graduation to witness the conferral of more than 900 master's degrees and 3,000 bachelor's degrees.
