Cal State L.A. Summa Cum Laude
Accepted to Top Med School

Los Angeles, CA – Cal State L.A. summa cum laude Bibhu Mohanty (Walnut resident), who will be going to Duke University School of Medicine this fall, will receive his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at the University’s Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, June 12. Duke Medical School is rated annually as one of the top five in the country.

Bibhu, who was admitted to Cal State L.A. through Early Entrance Program (EEP) at the age of 15, got an early start in pursuing his goal to become a physician. He hopes to focus his future career on medical care for the underserved and financially deprived.

Bibhu discovered Cal State L.A.’s EEP—the only program of its kind in the nation that enables gifted youth to participate fully in University life—through his father, Madhu Mohanty, who is a professor of economics and statistics at Cal State L.A. Recognizing his son’s potential and ambitions, Mr. Mohanty recommended his son to consider testing for admission to CSULA through this program. Bibhu says, “It was the best thing possible to be able to take the opportunity to move ahead.”

Holding a 4.0 GPA, Bibhu has published research presentations on “Comparisons of Male and Female Rat Brain Response to Post-Injury Estrogen Treatment,” “A Comparison of Post-Injury Compensatory Fiber Outgrowth in the Male and Female Rat Cholinergic System Under Varying Lengths of Estrogen Treatment,” and “Singular Spectrum Analysis of fMRI Data Sets.”

In the midst of all his studies, Bibhu has found time to volunteer as a physician’s aid at Pomona Valley Hospital and Medical Center. Through the Sri Satya Sai Service Organization, he has been a volunteer singer for elderly residents of the Glendale Convalescent Home and he has helped prepare and distribute food to the homeless in downtown Los Angeles. His interests outside of biology include painting, singing, and playing guitar, harmonium and tabla (traditional Indian drums).

On campus, Bibhu served as vice president of Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, orientation leader for CSULA Outreach and Recruitment, new student mentor and campus tour coordinator for EEP, service coordinator for the Golden Key National Honor Society, and a research assistant in the Brain Repair Lab of biology faculty member’s Sonsoles De Lacalle.

Named 1999-2000 Phi Kappa Phi Freshman of the Year, Bibhu has received numerous scholarships and is on the National Dean’s List and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. This year, he was a recipient of the Certificate of Merit from the campus chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.
