Goldwhite, Former CSU Trustee, to Speak at CSULA MasterÂs Hooding
Ceremony, June 10, 5:30 p.m.
Los Angeles, CA Â For the second year, California
State University, Los Angeles will hold a MasterÂs Hooding
Ceremony on the evening preceding the Undergraduate Commencement
Ceremony. The masterÂs event is scheduled for Friday, June 10,
5:30 p.m. in the University Athletic Stadium. Dr.
Harold Goldwhite, emeritus professor of chemistry and former
CSU trustee professor, will address the masterÂs candidates. More
than 1,500 masterÂs degrees will be conferred.
Professor Harold Goldwhite has been an honored member of the
Cal State L.A. Chemistry faculty for 43 years. He joined the Cal
State L.A. faculty in 1962 as an assistant professor, was promoted
to associate professor in 1964 and professor in 1967, and was
awarded the status of emeritus professor in 2004. He is past
director of, and currently serving as faculty consultant to the
California State University Institute for Teaching and Learning, a
systemwide resource for faculty.
Dr. Goldwhite was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the
California State University (CSU) by Governor Pete Wilson in 1998
and reappointed by Gov. Gray Davis in 2000. The Board establishes
policy for the CSU and manages and administers all colleges within
the system. Dr. Goldwhite's service on the Board ended in 2003. He
was the second CSU Faculty Trustee from Cal State L.A., following
Cal State L.A. colleague Dr. Robert D. Kully, who inaugurated the
Dr. Goldwhite was born in England and received a Bachelor of
Arts and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cambridge University. Before
joining the Cal State L.A. Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry, Dr. Goldwhite was a lecturer for the Chemistry
Department at the University of Manchester (England) Institute of
Science and Technology and served as a research associate at
Cornell University. His honors include visiting professorships at
the University of Strasbourg, France, the National University of
the Andes, Merida, Venezuela, and at other universities in England
and Mexico. He was honored as Cal State L.A.'s Outstanding
Professor in 1967 and was recognized by the CSU Board of Trustees
as an Outstanding Professor in 1978.
Dr. Goldwhite has been highly active in both academic
governance and community and professional organizations. He was
chair of the Chemistry Department at Cal State L.A. from 1971 to
1977 and from 1992 to 1993, and served as acting chair in 1984 and
1991. He was also chair of the University's Academic Senate,
served in the Statewide Senate of the CSU as chair of the Academic
Affairs Committee, and was a member of the Executive Committee and
chair of the Senate. He was one of the prime movers in the local
chapters of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
and was a member of the California Faculty Association board of
directors from 1979 to 1983. A member of the American Chemical
Society, he has served as chair of the Society's Southern

WHAT: The Commencement of Cal State L.A.Âs 58th
graduating class will be a festive celebration. More than 15,000
people are expected at this yearÂs Undergraduate Commencement to
witness the conferral of more than 3,600 bachelorÂs degrees on
SATURDAY June 11. At the MasterÂs Hooding Ceremony,
June 10, more than 1,500 degrees will be conferred. On June 11,
Antonia HernÃ¡ndez, president and CEO of the California
Community Foundation, will address the undergraduate class of
2005, and Raul Yzaguirre, recent past president and
co-founder of the National Council of La Raza, will receive a CSU
Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. On June 10, Harold
Goldwhite, former CSU Trustee and CSULA emeritus professor of
chemistry, will address the masterÂs candidates.
