Cal State L.A. Professor Honored as World Safety Person of the Year 1999

Los Angeles, CA -- Donald E. Rhodes, adjunct professor of Health and Nutritional Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently named World Safety Person of the Year 1999 at the annual conference of the World Safety Organization (WSO).

Rhodes was nominated and selected for his leadership and involvement with accident prevention through his work in the sphere of industry. He consults with senior management and safety directors of companies and agencies to identify, develop, and implement comprehensive occupational safety management strategies. His strategies involve formulating programs and policies using behavior-based programs. He is qualified as an expert witness for the U.S. Federal Court.

Rhodes has demonstrated his dedication to safety in his support of the international safety community through his involvement in the programs of the WSO. He is a member of the WSO Board of Directors, and actively works to expand the safety profession globally.

Since 1991, Rhodes has been part of the Cal State L.A. faculty, and teaches upper division courses in occupational safety and health. In addition, he continues to be a visiting professor at the International Science and Technology University in Kiev, Ukraine.

Rhodes is a specialist in hazardous waste operations and the breakdown of the Soviet environmental system. His ongoing research projects include studies of the after-effects of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, and implementation of occupational safety public policy in the Newly Independent States.

As a delegate of the American Society of Safety Engineers, he was among the first safety engineers and environmental health professionals to visit the former Soviet Union, in September-October, 1991.

Rhodes has several publications to his name, and has been the keynote speaker at a number of conferences in the United States as well as overseas. He has received much recognition for his active role in advocating the safety profession and safety education. The Los Angeles County has recognized him for his dedication to community service, and Cal State L.A. has honored him with the 1994 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
