DIVA AND MAIDEN VOYAGE
TWO-ALL FEMALE JAZZ ORCHESTRAS
TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME
AT LUCKMAN THEATRE

LOS ANGELES, CA-April 13, 1999-Diva and Maiden Voyage, two all-female jazz orchestras will perform together for the first time in concert on Saturday, May 1, at 8 p.m. at the Luckman Theatre on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles.

Diva is based in New York and steeped in the history of jazz, but infused with the progressive harmonies of today. Shattering the paradigm of big bands from yesteryears, all 14 sidemen, led by drummer Sherrie Maricle-are women. Diva plays contemporary, mainstream big band jazz arranged by band members and renowned musicians including Tommy Newsom, Michael Abene, John LaBarbera and Jerry Dodgion. Diva members are alumnae from other big bands such as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Doc Severinson. But for many of the musicians this is the first time they have played together in a band where the music is written expressly for the individual personalities of the musicians themselves.

Under the leadership of saxophonist Ann Patterson, Los Angeles based Maiden Voyage has become one of the most talked-about big bands around. Begun in 1980 in a traditionally male-dominated jazz world, the 17-piece band quickly outgrew the novelty of being an all women's band, achieving a high level of respect from musicians, critics and audiences alike. World-renowned jazz critic Leonard Feather hailed Maiden Voyage as "...not just the best orchestra of its sex, but one of the most rewarding bands on the present scene."

Tickets are $32.50/$27.50 and $15 for students and seniors, and are available through TicketMaster and the Luckman Theatre Box Office at (323) 343-6600.

The Luckman Theatre is a major component of the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, a non-profit multidisciplinary arts facility. The complex is located at Cal State L.A. at the junction of the I-710 (Long Beach) and I-10 (San Bernardino) freeways, five minutes from downtown. Parking is conveniently located.
