Cal State L.A. Professor Receives
AATSP Teacher of the Year Award

Los Angeles, CA - Domnita Dumitrescu, professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently selected to receive the 2000 AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese) Teacher of the Year Award for the college/university level. She will be presented with a plaque and a $500 check at the Annual AATSP Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in August 2000.

Domnita Dumitrescu, who received her Ph.D. from USC, is an expert in Spanish language and linguistics, with emphasis on formal grammar, pragmatics and sociolinguistics of the Spanish-speaking world; in contrastive analysis of Spanish, English and French; and in Romanian language from a Romance comparative perspective.

Active in several professional organizations, she has been listed in the most recent editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and 2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 20th Century. She is a frequent contributor to scholarly journals in the U.S., Mexico, Argentina and Europe.

Dr. Dumitrescu served as president of the Southern California Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (1992-94), and has been an associate editor of Hispania, the association's scholarly journal, since 1996. She is also serving a second term as vice-president of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi. She was a Fulbright Scholar to Argentina, Fall 1993. She is fluent in Spanish, Romanian and French.

Since its inception in 1917, the AATSP has promoted the study and teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and other related languages, literatures, and cultures at all levels. Through an exchange of pedagogical and scholarly information, the AATSP encourages heritage and second language study and supports projects to that end. The Outstanding Teacher Awards are presented annually to an outstanding teacher at K-8, 9-12, community college, and college/university levels.
