Cal State L.A. Theatre Students
to Participate in
Workshop with
Steppenwolf Theatre Company

Los Angeles, CA – California State University, Los Angeles’ theatre arts majors Kariem Marbury (Los Angeles-90032 resident) and Jonathan Williams (Corona resident) have recently received full scholarships from CSU Summer Arts to participate in the Steppenwolf School at Summer Arts—a two-week intensive workshop (July 14-July 27).

This workshop provides an extraordinary opportunity for student directors and actors to study with members of one of America’s most prominent regional theatres—Steppenwolf Theatre Company. The class features three distinct segments of learning including Viewpoints, Improvisation for the Actor, and Ensemble/Scene Study. The students will have the opportunity to work directly with Steppenwolf ensemble member Tina Landau. Landau has directed Bells are Ringing on Broadway, and numerous productions for Steppenwolf.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a Chicago-based international performing arts institution committed to ensemble collaboration and artistic risk through its work with its permanent ensemble, guest artists, partner institutions and the community, and has spawned a generation of America’s most gifted artists. Founded in 1976 as an ensemble of nine actors, Steppenwolf has grown into an internationally renowned company of thirty-three artists whose talents include acting, directing, playwriting, filmmaking, and textual adaptation. Steppenwolf celebrates the intelligence of the actor, the vision of the director, the words of the playwright and the power of the theater.

In November 1998, Steppenwolf was the only arts organization awarded a 1998 National Medal of Arts, presented by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a White House ceremony. The Medal honors individuals and organizations “who in the President’s judgment are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States.”

CSU Summer Arts creates a multidisciplinary and interactive environment, breaking down barriers and breaking new ground every day. To foster this environment, participants are encouraged to live on campus and take advantage of the spontaneous interaction that occurs when hundreds of students and artists are housed together in an intensive artistic environment. The combination of workshops, public events, and community connections make Summer Arts different from any other program in the world.
