 | Cal State L.A. Hosts Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest Los Angeles, CA -- Since 1991 the Cal State L.A. Chinese Studies Center has been organizing annual poetry recitation contests as part of its effort to promote interest in Chinese studies. This yearly event is made possible by a generous donation from a local Chinese businessman, Mr. Major Tsai. The Ninth Annual Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest took place this month. Qingyun Wu and Kylie Hsu, director and associate director of the Chinese Studies Center, conducted the contest. Participants recited two poems each at their level of proficiency-elementary, intermediate, and advanced. There was also a special category for nonnative speakers. Recitations were judged based on pronunciation and intonation; tone; emotion and expression; and manner. The participants represented several ethnic groups and schools in Southern California. "It was gratifying to see such diversity," said Kylie Hsu, assistant professor of Chinese in Cal State L.A.'s Modern Languages and Literatures department. "It was also encouraging to see so many nonnative speakers interested in Chinese poetry. Some of them have been participating in the contest every year," she said. "For our students, it was an enjoyable learning experience. Through poetry, they learn to appreciate Chinese language, literature, and culture." The following are winners of this year's contest: Intermediate Level Advanced Level Nonnative Speakers Category In addition, a Major Tsai Scholarship in Chinese Studies was awarded to Christina Ng.
