For 3 weeks at Cal State L.A. this summer, 150 local kids polish up their writing skills

Five youngsters also attain the art of filmmaking during the summer

Los Angeles, CA – While other kids might spend their summer basking under the sun at the beach, hanging out at shopping malls, or going to the movies, more than 150 young budding writers are enriching their literary skills and developing their creativity for three weeks at Cal State L.A.

In a summer camp environment, Cal State L.A.’s Young Writers’ Camp (for grades K-7) features fun-filled writing assignments and invigorating activities, such as drama, music, storytelling, poetry, drawing and painting.

As part of the University’s Summer High School Writing Institute (for grades 8-11), one group of youngsters is exploring the creative elements of writing while another is mastering the techniques of essay writing.

Both programs—sponsored by the L.A. Writing Project at Cal State L.A.—started July 12 and will culminate with an Open House Thursday, July 29. Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend the grades K-3 presentations to begin at 10 a.m. and the grades 4-11 presentations at 10:30 a.m. To arrange interviews and photo sessions, please contact the CSULA Public Affairs office in advance at (323) 343-3050.

Participants in the camp and institute come from several area cities, including Alhambra, Baldwin Park, Bell, Commerce, Glendale, Glendora, Granada Hills, Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, San Gabriel, South Pasadena, Walnut, Woodland Hills, and Van Nuys.

The L.A. Writing Project aims to build an ongoing and expanding community of young writers and readers. The objectives are also for the young students to improve writing confidence, analyze different genres of writing, engage in constructive critiques, and receive one-on-one instruction.

At the Open House, there will also be an 11 a.m. screening of film projects produced by five future “Spielbergs.” Through the CSULA Young Filmmakers’ Camp, the aspiring filmmakers—grades 6 to 12—have been learning the essential tools and imaginative process for scriptwriting, cinematography, computer editing, and directing.
