CSULA technology students to exhibit at ECO Innovators Showcase

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to host 2011 Spring GREEN Expo

Los Angeles, CA – To showcase sustainability projects created by college students throughout Southern California, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) has selected a group of Cal State L.A.’s technology students to exhibit at this year’s ECO Innovators Showcase on Wednesday, May 4.

The Showcase, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is a part of the MWD’s annual Spring GREEN Expo. The Expo is a one-day educational event focused on raising public awareness of environmental issues and providing information on how consumers can work and live greener.

This year’s Showcase will feature two displays by CSULA technology students along with other projects from various colleges, trade schools and universities. One display will focus on CSULA’s “H2OMe: Hydrogen Home Fueling Station project,” which recently finished among the top 10 in the Hydrogen Education Foundation’s 2011 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. Another will be a display featuring CSULA’s student-built hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, which was recently filmed in one of the episodes for the Mercedes Benz F-Cell World Tour. Each student will receive a certificate of recognition for participating in the event.

The exhibits will be displayed in the outdoor courtyard of the MWD headquarters, located at 700 N. Alameda Street in Los Angeles (adjacent to Union Station).

Cal State L.A.’s College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology offers a hands-on curriculum and early research opportunities to prepare students for advanced studies and a fast-paced work environment. It is home to the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Energy and Sustainability as well as the NASA University Research Center, the first and only one of its kind in California.

The College has produced the following award-winning student projects: Solar Eagle III solar car, Mini Baja all-terrain vehicle, and an electricity-powered recumbent tricycle. Its original supermileage car was first in the U.S. in the 2004 SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Contest with 1,615 miles per gallon fuel efficiency. In 2006, Cal State L.A.’s mechanical engineering team became the first university crew west of the Mississippi—and the second overall—to achieve successful flight powered by fuel cells.
