State of forensic science services today
Cal State L.A. forum to address ‘Grim Sleeper’ case,
familial DNA searches, issues facing public crime labs

Note to editors and news directors: Federal, state, Los Angeles County and city government decision makers as well as criminal justice officials will gather to hear presentations and discuss issues facing public crime laboratories. The forum, entitled “The Other Side of the Yellow Tape,” is presented by the California Forensic Science Institute (CFSI) at Cal State L.A.
Supported by the Gilbert W. Lindsay Endowment for Public Policy in Forensic Sciences, the event will be held Friday, Oct. 1, 1 p.m., in the Fujioka Room of the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center at Cal State L.A.
The keynote speaker will be Detective Dennis Kilcoyne of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division, who is in charge of the investigation of the “Grim Sleeper murder case.”
Additionally, Bureau Chief Jill Spriggs of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Forensic Services will discuss the use of familial DNA searches in California. Following will be an open dialogue with managers from public crime laboratories about the successes and shortfalls of crime lab services that will provide a clearer picture of the state of forensic science services today.
