Cal State L.A. Students Exchange
Teaching Experiences and Knowledge
with Korean Special Education Teachers
at Academy Program

Los Angeles, CA -- The California Academy on Transition Studies (CATS) is hosting the 4th Collaborative Training of Special Education Teachers and Rehabilitation Counselors program between the Charter School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles and the Korea Institute for Special Education.

This provides a great opportunity for Cal State L.A. students in the master's degree in Special Education option in the Transition Studies to exchange teaching experiences and knowledge with Korean Special Education teachers. Participants will have two weeks of visitation to various service organizations related to Special Education and two weeks of practicum at Washington Elementary School in Burbank Unified School District.

Twenty-four Korean teachers and 16 Cal State L.A. M.A. students will participate in this collaborative project between July 17 - August 11, 2000. During this time, they will be engaged in the following activities:

* Observing, aiding the student and teacher, and making presentations to the students

* Completing their Cal State L.A. assignments (e.g., informal assessment, parent interview if possible, explore IEP, writing IEP goals and objectives, writing lesson plan)

* Collaborating with American classroom teachers and Korean Special Education teachers through team teaching, discussion, and information sharing Shadowing students receiving special education services (e.g., special education classes, speech therapy, adapted P.E., computer lab, field trip.)

Our opening ceremony for this collaborative program will be on July 17 and the closing ceremony will be on August 11, 2000.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE PROGRAM?
You will have experience working with special education professionals from Korea, visiting local special education related service organizations, and teaching students with disabilities in the classroom settings and community. M.A. students in Transition Studies will have mandatory two-week participation in this collaboration project.
