LOS ANGELES – The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. launches its 10th Anniversary 2003-04 season on Saturday, July 19 at 8:00 p.m. with an “encore” engagement of AVAZ International Dance Theatre. AVAZ, whose first appearance on the Luckman stage was in 1996, will première “GURAN - A New Vision of an Ancient Tale,” a bittersweet story of power and politics told through the eyes of the Guran, the wild zebras of Persia.

Jamal, artistic director and choreographer of the AVAZ International Dance Theatre, has brought to life a timeless tale of revenge and redemption, an affirmation of life, inspired by a famous quatrain of Omar Khayyam. In a full evening-length dance drama, Jamal spins the ancient fable of the encounters between the Guran and the famous hunter king Bahram-e Gur, inspired by the thousand-year old tale from the epic history of Persia, the Shah-nameh, the Book of Kings.

The cast will include: Mary Esther Espinoza, Ziba Ezadi, Miguel Figueroa, Melonie Grasty-Vazquez, Brandy Maya Healy, Florence Lee, Carla Lubow, Joy Ann Martin, Carolyn Melson, Edgar Miramontes, Karen Ochoa, Lori Parker, Elian Quesada, Ixchel Reglado, Bita Sharif, Daniel Whisler, Andrew Williams, and Marjan Yazdanniaz. Music is by Mohammad Reza Aligholi, Hosein Alizadeh, Ahmad Pejman, and Peyman Yazdanian (by permission of Hermes Music).

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex was launched in 1993, with several performances taking place in other venues prior to the facility’s inaugural gala in November 1994. From the beginning, the Luckman has presented a varied slate of excellent local, national, and international performing and visual artists. Among the highlights of the 10th anniversary season will be the following “Luckman Encore” performers: AVAZ International Dance Theatre, State Street Ballet (August 1), Ballet Pacifica (August 1 and April 3), Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet (August 2), Danza Floricanto/USA (October 18), Lula Washington Dance Theatre (October 10-11 and December 29), the Luckman Jazz Orchestra (November 22 and Spring ’04), Bobby Rodriguez (December 6), and others to be announced. The full 2003-04 season schedule is available by calling (323) 343-6600.

Patrons will also enjoy a new dinner-theatre opportunity at the Luckman this season, “A Feast for the Senses,” at the new French bistro-style University Club Restaurant on campus. Before selected events, including the AVAZ International Dance Theatre performance on July 19, a gourmet dinner will be available for order through Golden Eagle Hospitality by calling (323) 343-6770.
