Dr. Allison Mattheis (Charter College of Education at Cal State LA) presents her research complicating perceptions of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields as spaces in which personal identity is subsumed in the pursuit of a single-minded focus on objective scientific truths. In particular, Dr. Mattheis and her co-researchers seek to answer a question that is more than just “what do scientists think about being queer?” or “how many queer scientists are there?”
Riding at night through streets deemed dangerous in East Los Angeles, the Ovarian Psycos use their bicycles to confront the violence in their lives. The film explores the impact of the group’s activism, born of feminist ideals, indigenous understanding and an urban/hood mentality, on neighborhood women and communities as they confront injustice, racism, and violence. Directed by Joanna Sokolowski and Kate Trumbull-LaVelle. 2016. 72 minutes.
Join us for an important conversation between Dr. Melina Abdullah, faculty and chair for the Pan-African Studies Department, and Tim Wise, a leading anti-racist scholar-activist, as they discuss race, racism, white supremacy, and ongoing structural and institutional inequities in K-12 and higher education in the United States. Presented in conjunction with the Charter College of Education at Cal State LA.
