Learning Outcome 1: Education Benefits

As a result of attending the VRC’s Student Veterans and Dependents Information Session, military-connected students will be able to identify the three steps needed to receive their VA, DoD, or CalVet education benefits as measured by a post-seminar assessment.

Assessment Measures
We will use a paper quiz to examine whether military-connected students can identify the steps needed to receive their benefits. All results will be recorded on an Excel file for analysis.

Assessment Data Collection Plan
Data will be collected at the conclusion of our Veterans and Dependents Information Session.

Existing Data
We plan to collect and use baseline data to examine trends for this student learning outcome.

Use of Results
Results from this assessment will be shared with the Student Life Assessment Council and VRC staff to provide insights that will help us understand whether military-connected students comprehend the process to receive their education benefits. Results from the assessment will be used to help us identify needed programmatic changes and improvements to our onboarding sessions.

Learning Ouctome 3: Self-Advocacy

As a result of attending the VRC’s Student Veterans and Dependents Information Session, military-connected students will develop and practice their self-advocacy skillsets as measured through an end-of-the-year focus group with a random number of incoming student veterans.

Assessment Measures:
We plan to conduct two 30-minute focus group sessions in the Spring semester that will gauge the advocacy experiences of military-connected students. We plan to ask questions focused on assessing whether students were successful in meeting their advocacy goals and how. Advocacy will be defined as having practiced their learned self-advocacy skills.

Assessment Data Collection Plan:
Student focus group data will be collected before the end of the Spring semester.

Existing Data:
We plan to examine baseline data to examine trends for this student learning outcome.

Analysis of Results
Results will be analyzed through the collection of student demographic questionnaires. Demographic information will help us understand whether there are student populations who are at greater risk or need additional support in self-advocacy. All student identifying data will be removed from qualitative analyses and emerging themes will be examined.

Use of Results
Results from this assessment will be shared with VRC staff to provide insights that will help us understand whether military-connected students know the self-advocacy process and skillsets to utilize to support their transition.
