Learning Outcome 1: Education Benefits
As a result of attending the VRC’s Student Veterans and Dependents Information Session, military-connected students will be able to identify the three steps needed to receive their VA, DoD, or CalVet education benefits as measured by a post-seminar assessment.
Assessment Measures
A paper quiz will be used to assess whether military-connected students can identify the steps needed to receive their benefits. All results will be recorded in an Excel file for analysis.
Assessment Data Collection Plan
Data will be collected at the conclusion of the Veterans and Dependents Information Session.
Existing Data
Baseline data will be collected and used to examine trends for this student learning outcome.
Analysis of Results
Results will be analyzed using Excel. All student identifying data will be removed prior to analysis.
Use of Results
Results from this assessment will be shared with the Student Life Assessment Council and VRC staff to provide insights into whether military-connected students comprehend the process of receiving their education benefits. Findings will inform needed programmatic changes and improvements to onboarding sessions.

Learning Outcome 2: Campus Resources
As a result of attending the VRC’s Student Veterans and Dependents Information Session, military-connected students will be able to identify four campus departments that they can access as measured by a post-seminar assessment.

Learning Outcome 3: Self-Advocacy
As a result of attending the VRC’s Student Veterans and Dependents Information Session, military-connected students will develop and practice their self-advocacy skills as measured through an end-of-year focus group with a random sample of incoming student veterans.
Assessment Measures
Two 30-minute focus group sessions will be conducted in the spring semester to evaluate advocacy experiences among military-connected students. Questions will assess whether students were successful in meeting their advocacy goals and how they practiced learned self-advocacy skills.
Assessment Data Collection Plan
Student focus group data will be collected before the end of the spring semester.

Baseline data will be examined to identify trends for this student learning outcome.
Analysis of Results
Results will be analyzed using demographic questionnaires to determine whether certain student populations require additional support in self-advocacy. All student identifying data will be removed from qualitative analyses, and emerging themes will be identified.

Results will be shared with VRC staff to provide insights into whether military-connected students understand and practice self-advocacy skills that support their transition. Findings will inform needed programmatic changes and improvements to onboarding sessions.
