Educational Opportunity Program

Learning Outcome 1: Fall Semester Counseling Session

After attending their initial fall semester appointment with their EOP counselor, a freshman EOP student will have an academic plan and be able to identify at least three EOP and University resources to assist them in their academic and social transition to the University. These resources can include services such as Financial Aid, the Career Center, the Cross Cultural Centers, and the Office of Students with Disabilities.

Assessment Measures
Appointments scheduled during the fall semester will be assessed.  Only “first time” appointments will be assessed so if a student has a follow-up visit with their counselor it will not be evaluated in this manner.  We will use a short survey following the appointment. The survey will be presented on paper for quick collection of responses while students are still engaged in the counselor’s office.

The following holistic and prescriptive advising questions are examples of what will be asked of students to achieve this outcome:

  1. How are you doing with your classes?
  2. What challenges are you experiencing this semester?
  3. What type of assistance or support do you need to be successful?
  4. Are you currently working, and if so, how many hours?
  5. How does your family support you with your educational goals, if at all?
  6. Do you reside on campus or do you commute?
  7. Did you know that EOP students can apply for Cal Fresh benefits?

Assessment Data Collection Plan
Data will be collected via an electronic survey that will be administered to student mid-semester.

Existing Data
Due to the nature of this outcome, there is no existing data to compare against this year’s cohort that will allow us to measure the overall success of the outcome.  However, with the recent implementation of EAB, we will be able to accurately demonstrate the overall success of creating student academic plans. Equally, the survey that will be administered mid-semester will reveal whether or not students are able to successful identify helpful resources.

Analysis of Results
The Research Associate will conduct the necessary data analysis and provide results of her research to the Associate Director and Director.

Use of Results
The results will be shared at a management team meeting and with the Student Life Assessment Council.  Then, the information will be shared with counselors for their feedback on best practices and proposed changes to appointment process.

Student Life Domain: Personal, Social, and Professional Identity Development
Institutional Strategic Priority:  Student Success
Institutional Learning Outcome: Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

Learning Outcome 2: Workshops

As a result of attending 3 required workshops, EOP students will effectively demonstrate an increased understanding of how their personal, social, and professional identity impacts their ability to be successful in school.

Assessment Measures
Proof of participation is submitted via a sign-in sheet and/or “blue slips/cards.”  Attendance gathered by the sign-in sheets and Blue Cards will be entered into a database to identify types of programs students are attending, dates of participation, and confirm completion of the requirement.  Data regarding students’ understanding around identity will also be collected via the electronic survey that will be administered to students mid-semester.

Assessment Data Collection Plan
Data will be collected as students complete their participation cards and submit them to the EOP office throughout fall semester 2018.  Attendance sign-in sheets will be submitted to the Associate Director by the Counselor that facilitated the EOP Workshop.

Existing Data
Identify whether students were special or conditional admits.  Are conditional admits completing this requirement prior to the November benchmark at a higher rate than their special admit colleagues?

Analysis of Results
The Research Associate will conduct the necessary data analysis and provide results of her research to the Associate Director and Director.

Use of Results
Results will be shared with the Student Life Assessment Council.

Learning Outcome 3: Supplemental Instruction

By enrolling in the EOP Supplemental Instruction Program, EOP students will successfully complete their 1st year GE math class during fall semester 2018.

Assessment Measures
EOP students who complete GE math SI will be used as the cohort to study. How many EOP students enrolled in the SI class?   Did EOP students who were in SI classes pass their class at a higher rate than those EOP students who did not participate in SI?

Focus groups will be held with these students to hear their opinions on whether SI had an impact on their performance.

Assessment Data Collection Plan
Grades from the fall semester will be used. Focus groups will be arranged for spring 2019.

Questions that will be asked during the focus group will include:

  1. In what ways was SI helpful to you in your GE math course?
  2. What specific strategies, practices or resources helped you to be more effective in your ability to master key concepts? In your studying? In your ability successful meet course requirements?
