Survivor Assistance at the Student Health Center

We Can Help!

The Student Health Center offers confidential assistance and resources for students who are impacted by dating and domestic violence, sexual violence, and misconduct, stalking, and other crimes.

  • Call 323-343-3300 to schedule an appointment.

Medical Care

Obtaining medical care after an assault is very important. Ideally, this care is obtained from hospitals or clinics that specialize in survivor assistance and forensic examination. 24-hour hotlines can provide survivors with the locations of appropriate facilities.

Related medical services offered by the Student Health Center include:

  • Injury documentation, care and treatment
  • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • Emergency contraception
  • Case-specific referrals

Services are available by appointment by calling 323-343-3300.

Important Notes

Forensic Exams

The Student Health Center does not conduct forensic exams. As such, it is important to consider obtaining medical services from hospitals or clinics that perform forensic exams*, especially for sexual assaults that occurred within the preceding 150 hours. 24-hour hotlines can provide survivors with the locations of appropriate facilities. When crimes are reported to law enforcement, the responding agency will assist survivors with evidence preservation. For additional information on the forensic exam, visit the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network's What is a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam?

*Sexual violence victims and survivors are entitled to obtain sexual assault forensic (evidence) exams at no cost even if they choose not to report incidents to law enforcement. For additional information, please see Evidence Preservation.

Mandated Reporting

The Student Health Center is a confidential reporting resource; however, California law requires health practitioners to report details of injuries resulting from domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes involving patients they treat to a local law enforcement agency.

Refer to Reporting Options and Obligations below for details.

The Student Health Center is a Confidential Reporting Option

This means when students disclose incidents of dating/domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking (or other crimes), the Student Health Center cannot report any information about the disclosure to anyone at the University, including the Title IX Officer, without a student's consent and signed authorization.

This is an important right because it means students can seek assistance and support from the Student Health Center without triggering a University investigation that reveals student identities or that disclosures have been made.

Notice of Privacy Practices

The Student Health Center is required by law to protect the privacy of client and patient health information and to provide a notice of privacy practices to those who receive services. Details can be found in the SHC Notice of Privacy Practices.

Mandated Reporting Responsibilities

Although the Student Health Center does not notify campus authorities of disclosures, legally mandated reporting may apply to a disclosure.

All Student Health Center (SHC) personnel are mandated child abuse and neglect reporters (as are other Cal State LA employees). In addition, depending on the role of the workforce member who assists a survivor (e.g., psychological counselor, medical provider or health educator), elder abuse, suspicious injury, or other legally mandated reporting may apply.

Students are encouraged to inquire about mandated reporting requirements prior to disclosures to allow for informed decision-making about what will or will not be disclosed and still receive needed care and support.

Campus-Based Reporting Options

Additional campus reporting options are described in Rights and Options for Victims of Sexual Misconduct/Sexual Assault, Sexual Exploitation, Dating and Domestic Violence, and Stalking.

An agreement with Peace Over Violence has established on-campus advocacy services for students. Students who wish to meet with the Campus Advocate can schedule on-campus confidential appointments by contacting:

To help reduce risk of harm, safety planning can be extremely important. As safety needs vary depending on circumstances, consulting with a 24-hour hotline, the Campus Advocate, law enforcement, or the Title IX Officer is recommended.

If desired, basic safety planning is available through the Student Health Center by appointment by calling 323-343-3300.

Helpful safety planning strategies may be found through the:

Crisis intervention and counseling services are available through the Student Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Call 323-343-3300 for an appointment.

Crisis intervention counseling is available 24 hours a day through 24-hour hotlines. Ongoing counseling, support groups, and other advocacy services are also available through local domestic violence and sexual assault survivor support agencies.

All crime victims and survivors are encouraged to report crimes and policy violations to law enforcement, University Police, the Title IX Officer (Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Title IX), and/or campus security authorities.

If requested, Student Health Center staff can assist survivors with these notifications and connect survivors with local support agencies.

Local domestic and sexual violence survivor support agencies and 24-hour hotlines provide specialized and case-specific safety planning, information, resources, care, support, and services.

Student Health Center staff provide general information, resources, care, and support, as well as providing referrals to victim and survivor support community resources. Staff also assist students with notifications to law enforcement and the Title IX Officer, if requested.
