INTRODUCTION
I began my Cal State LA career in the 2006-2007 academic year as coordinator of the Health Science Program. In Fall 2007, I began my appointment as a professor in the Health Science Program (now the Department of Health Science). My previous faculty appointments were at Kent State University, College of Saint Elizabeth (Morristown, NJ), Walden University, Touro University International, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, at Cal State Long Beach. I've also had administrative positions at RAP Inc. (telephone crisis hotline and telephone reassurance program for homebound elderly in Genesee County, NY), American Council on Science and Health, and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. I was the founding president of the Ohio Council Against Health Fraud, Inc. and the president of the National Council Against Health Fraud.
TEACHING INTERESTS
I've taught a wide variety of public health and health education courses. The subject matter has included: personal, consumer, & environmental health; epidemiology; biostatistics; program planning/evaluation; drug education; addiction; ethics; health policy; and death education.
RESEARCH
I'm a specialist in the study of health-related superstition, pseudoscience, sensationalism, schemes, scams, frauds, deception, and misperception. I'm working on a study of the prevalence of quackery among chiropractors. I co-host of Credential Watch (http://www.credentialwatch.org) and I'm associate editor of Consumer Health Digest, a free weekly e-newsletter available by subscription at http://www.quackwatch.org/00AboutQuackwatch/chd.html. and a co-author of Consumer Health: A Guide to Intelligent Decisions, Eighth Edition (http://www.chsourcebook.com). The views expressed in these writings are not necessarily shared by California State University, Los Angeles, but they should be.
