INTRODUCTION
I began my Cal State LA career in the 2006-2007 academic year as coordinator of the Health Science Program. In Fall 2007, I began my appointment as a professor in the Health Science Program (which later became the Department of Health Science and is now a B.S. degree program in the Department of Public Health). I'm also a professor in in the CSULA Honors College. My previous faculty appointments were at Kent State University, College of Saint Elizabeth (Morristown, NJ), Walden University, Touro University International, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Cal State Long Beach. I've also had administrative positions at RAP Inc. (telephone crisis hotline and telephone reassurance program for homebound elderly in Genesee County, NY), American Council on Science and Health, and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. I was the founding president of the Ohio Council Against Health Fraud, Inc. and the president of the National Council Against Health Fraud. I am a founding fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine, associate editor of the e-newsletter Consumer Health Digest, a co-host of the Credential Watch website, an advisor for the Quackwatch network of websites, and a consultant to the Committee on Skeptical Inquiry
TEACHING INTERESTS
I'm particularly interested in promoting in my teaching information literacy, numeracy (numerical literacy), healthy skepticism, science & ethics-based practice, and consumer advocacy regarding public health issues. I have taught more than 50 different undergraduate and graduate courses in my career.
RESEARCH
Most of my research focuses on health-related misinformation, sensationalism, superstition, pseudoscience, opposition to science, fraud, and quackery in advertising, publicity, and direct selling via print and electronic media. I am currently studying how practicing chiropractors mislead consumers about services they provide to patients. I look forward to doing similar investigations of other types of licensed practitioners.
