Awards and Grants

 1996     Chosen to represent CSLA at the Commission on Learning Resources and Instructional Technology Institute during its state-wide summer session "Putting Learning First:  Taking Advantage of New Technologies," to be held at CSPU Pomona on June 17-19.
 1995   $1,800 by Auxiliary Services, Cal State L.A., to pay honoraria of CSU faculty participants in a conference I organized under the title "Books by CSU Faculty:  Ethnic Studies, Gender, Literary Theory, and Multiculturalism," held at Cal State L.A. on May 19.

The Rainbow Festival Award, University of California, Irvine

       1984     Awarded a University Projects Fund grant (CSULA) to organize and pay for travel, lodging, and meal of conference participants in the Junípero Serra International Conference held at Cal State L.A. on 12 December.  This conference was co-sponsored by the Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana (Spain).
                 1982      

A $20,000 grant by the Rockefeller Foundation (received jointly with Dr. Louis Negrete); this grant resulted in an international conference (planned and organized by Robertoo Cantú) entitled "Tecnología y cultura en la frontera de México y los Estados Unidos," held at La Jolla, California on December 9-12, 1983.  A total of 98 guests from Mexico (faculty, researchers, students) participated, with the grant covering all of their expenses.

           1981     $2,000 grant awarded by the Bicentennial Committee (CSULA) for the Chicano History and Culture Week held on November 16-20, 1981, planned and organized by Roberto Cantú to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the City of Los Angeles.

Distinguished Alumni Award, San Diego State University

   1970      Internship Award given by the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education to study mental health issues during a ten-week seminar held at Camarillo State Hospital (California) on the summer of 1970. The seminar included an eight-week term of volunteer assignment with mental patients. (I volunteered to "practice" in a mental clinic close to the Oxnard's Mexican barrio.)
