Office: King Hall C4035
Dionne Espinoza was raised in the San Gabriel Valley cities of Alhambra and El Monte. She received her B.A. with honors in English Languages and Literature from the University of California, Berkeley and her Ph.D. in English from Cornell University. She has taught at UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and more recently, was a faculty member at UW Madison. Prof. Espinoza chose CSULA as the place to teach because the student population and the local surroundings are at the center of exciting shifts in the dynamics of the Los Angeles and California landscape. Her research and teaching are centered on the topics of Chicana/Latina studies, comparative women of color, cultural studies, feminisms, and women's movements..
I see the classroom as a space for intellectual dialogue and energetic debate. My goal is to activate student's knowledge and engagement in critical thinking about issues of importance to them.
My current research project is Revolutionary Sisters: Chicana Activism and the Cultural Politics of Chicano Power. It is an exploration of gender in the Chicano movement and women's responses to male dominance as they pursued their movement activism. Articles on Chicana activism, popular culture, and literary theory have been published in Other Sisterhoods: Women of Color and Literary Theory, Aztlan: A Journal of Chicano Studies, and Velvet Barrios: Sexualities and Chicano Popular Culture.
